XVI . The Bend in the Road The next morning Matthew was standing in the doorway with a newspaper in his hand when he suddenly fell to the floor . Marilla and Anne ran to him , but it was too late . When the doctor came , he said that Matthew had died at once and probably without pain . The cause had been a sudden shock , and the shock was explained by the newspaper . It contained the news that the Abbey Bank had failed . All that day the neighbours came and went at Green Gables . That night Diana offered to stay with Anne , but Anne wanted to be alone . She could not cry . She lay awake with a dull , terrible ache in her heart . Then , in the middle of the night , she remembered Matthew’s face smiling at her by the gate and heard his voice saying , “ My girl , my girl that I’m proud of , ” and the tears came at last . Marilla heard her and came in to comfort her . “ We’ve got each other , Anne , ” said Marilla . “ I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here , if you had never come . Oh , Anne , I know I’ve been strict and harsh with you , maybe . But you mustn’t think that I didn’t love you as well as Matthew did . It’s never been easy for me to say things out of my heart , but at a time like this it’s easier . I love you as dear as if you were my own flesh and blood , and you’ve been my joy and comfort ever since you came to Green Gables . ” Slowly life went on . Anne planted a white rosebush on Matthew’s grave , from the little Scotch roses that his mother had brought from Scotland long ago . Then Marilla went to town to see the eye doctor , and she came home with very bad news . If she stopped reading and sewing , wore special glasses and was careful not to cry , her eyes might not get any worse . But if she did not , she would be completely blind in six months . A few days later Anne saw Marilla talking to a man from Carmody at the gate . When he had gone , Marilla came in with tears in her eyes . “ He heard that I was going to sell Green Gables , and he wants to buy it , ” she said . “ Sell Green Gables ! ” cried Anne . “ Oh , Marilla , you can’t mean it ! ” “ Anne , I don’t know what else to do . All our money was in that bank . If my eyes were strong , I could stay here and manage with a good hired man . But as it is , I can’t . I’m thankful that you have your scholarship , Anne . I’m only sorry that you won’t have a home to come back to in your holidays . ” Marilla broke down and cried bitterly . “ You mustn’t sell Green Gables , ” said Anne firmly . “ You won’t have to stay here alone , Marilla . I’ll be with you , because I’m not going to Redmond . ” “ Not going to Redmond ! Why , what do you mean ? ” “ Just what I say . I’m not going to take the scholarship . I decided that on the night after you came home from town . You surely don’t think I could leave you alone in your trouble , after all you’ve done for me ? Mr Barry wants to rent the farm for next year , so you won’t have any worry about that . And I’m going to teach . I’ve asked for the school here , but I don’t expect to get it , because the school board has promised it to Gilbert Blythe . But I can have the school at Carmody . I can live at home and drive over there every day , at least while the weather is warm . And I’ll read to you and keep you cheerful . We’ll be real cosy and happy here together , you and I . ”
