“ Well , Marilla , I think you’re doing a very foolish thing . You don’t know what kind of child you’ll get . Only last week I read in the paper about a boy from an asylum who set fire to the house at night , and the family nearly burnt in their beds . If you’d asked my advice , I would have said no . ” “ There are risks in everything , ” said Marilla . “ We’ve made up our minds , and that’s the end of it . ” Mrs Rachel walked home with a great deal of satisfaction , because she would be able to tell the news to the whole of Avonlea before morning . “ Matthew and Marilla with an orphan boy ! ” she said to herself . “ Neither of them knows anything about children . I pity that poor boy , and that’s the truth . ” II . The Girl at the Station Matthew enjoyed the eight - mile drive to Bright River . It was a pretty road between small farms , with fir woods here and there and wild plum trees in white flower . The air was sweet with the smell of the apple orchards . The only thing that troubled Matthew was meeting women on the road , because on Prince Edward Island you were supposed to nod to everyone . Matthew was afraid of all women except Marilla and Mrs Rachel . He always had a feeling that they were laughing at him . When he reached the station , there was no sign of a train . The only person on the long platform was a girl , who was sitting on a pile of wooden shingles at the far end . Matthew hurried past her without looking . Then he found the stationmaster , who was locking the ticket office . “ The five - thirty train came in half an hour ago , ” the stationmaster said . “ A passenger got off for you , a little girl . She’s sitting out there on the shingles . I asked her to go into the waiting room , but she said that she would rather stay outside , because there was more scope for imagination there . ” “ I’m not expecting a girl , ” said Matthew . “ It’s a boy I’ve come for . ” “ Well , Mrs Spencer got off the train with that girl and left her with me . She said that you and your sister were adopting her . That’s all I know . Maybe they had run out of the kind of boys that you wanted . ” The stationmaster walked off to his supper . Poor Matthew was left with a job that was harder for him than fighting a lion . He had to walk up to a strange girl and ask her why she wasn’t a boy . She was about eleven years old . She wore a very short , very tight , very ugly dress of a yellowish grey colour and a faded brown sailor hat . Under the hat , two thick plaits of bright red hair hung down her back . Her face was small , white and thin , and it was covered in freckles . Her eyes were large , and they looked green in some lights and grey in others . As soon as she saw that Matthew was coming towards her , she stood up . She held an old bag in one thin brown hand , and she held out the other hand to him .
