“ Well now , I reckoned you’d come to see it like that , Marilla , ” he said . “ She’s such an interesting little thing . ” “ But mind , Matthew , you’re not to interfere with my methods , ” said Marilla . “ Perhaps an old maid doesn’t know much about bringing up a child , but I guess she knows more than an old bachelor . ” “ There , there , Marilla , you can have your own way , ” said Matthew . “ Only be as good and kind to her as you can without spoiling her . I kind of think she’s one of the sort you can do anything with , if you only get her to love you . ” Marilla did not tell Anne the news that night . Instead , when Anne was ready for bed , Marilla told her to say her prayers . Anne had never said a prayer in her life , because Mrs Thomas had told her that God had made her hair red on purpose , and after that Anne had never cared about Him much . So she knelt down and made up a prayer of her own . I was glad about the White Way and the cherry flowers , but this is something more than glad . I’ll try to be very good . It will be uphill work , because Mrs Thomas often told me that I was desperately wicked . Can you tell me why I’m crying ? ” “ I suppose it’s because you’re all excited and worked up , ” said Marilla . “ Now sit down on that chair and try to calm yourself . I’m afraid you cry and laugh far too easily . You can call me Marilla , because I’m not used to being called Miss Cuthbert , and it would make me nervous . ” So Anne stayed at Green Gables . She learnt the Lord’s Prayer from a card that hung in the kitchen , and she said that parts of it were just like music . She told Marilla about her imaginary friends : Katie Maurice , a girl who had lived in the glass door of a bookcase at Mrs Thomas’s house , and Violetta , an echo who had answered her from a green valley near the Hammonds ’ house . And she asked about the little girl at Orchard Slope , across the brook .
