VII . The Amethyst Brooch At the end of June the Sunday school had a picnic at the Lake of Shining Waters , and Anne had never been to a picnic in her life . There would be a boat on the lake and there would be ice cream , which Anne had never tasted , and she talked about nothing else for days . “ Oh , Marilla , I’ll die if I can’t go , ” she said . “ Of course I know that people don’t die of disappointment , but I’d feel as if I had died . Every time I think about the ice cream , my heart nearly stops . ” Marilla had a brooch that she valued above all her other possessions . It was a small , old - fashioned piece set with purple stones called amethysts , and it had belonged to her mother . A sea captain in the family had brought it from abroad many years before . Marilla wore it to church every Sunday , and Anne thought that it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen . On the Monday before the picnic Marilla came down from her room with a worried face . “ Anne , have you seen my amethyst brooch ? I thought I put it in my pincushion when I came home from church on Sunday evening , but I can’t find it anywhere . ” “ I saw it this afternoon when you were out , ” said Anne slowly . “ I was passing your door , and I saw it on the cushion . So I went in to look at it . ” “ Did you touch it ? ” “ Yes , ” said Anne . “ I picked it up and pinned it on my dress , just to see how it would look . But I put it back on the cushion . I only had it on for a minute , truly I did . ” Marilla searched the whole room , but the brooch was not there . She came back with a hard face . “ Anne , the brooch is gone . You said yourself that you were the last person who had it . Now tell me the truth at once . Did you take it out and lose it ? ” “ No , I didn’t , ” said Anne firmly . “ I never took the brooch out of your room , and that’s the truth , if I was to be led to the block for it . ” Marilla did not believe her . She sent Anne to her room and told her that she would stay there until she confessed . All that week the house was gloomy . Matthew was miserable , Marilla was angry and anxious , and Anne stayed in the east gable and refused to say anything more . On the morning of the picnic Anne called Marilla up to her room . “ I’m ready to confess , ” she said , and she repeated what she had clearly learnt by heart . “ I took the brooch . I meant to put it back , but it looked so beautiful on my dress that I decided to take it with me and imagine I was the Lady Cordelia Fitzgerald . When I was going over the bridge across the Lake of Shining Waters , I took it off to have another look at it . And it slipped through my fingers and went down , down , down , all purply and sparkling , and sank to the bottom of the lake forever . And that’s the very best I can do at confessing , Marilla . Now please punish me quickly , because I’d like to go to the picnic with nothing on my mind . ”
