VIII . Carrots In September Anne started school . She and Diana walked there every morning by a path that Anne had named the Birch Path . It went through a little wood of white birch trees , past a pond that Anne called Willowmere and a small green valley that she called Violet Vale . Diana said that she would never have thought of such lovely names herself . At first school went well . Anne was clever and quick , and she soon became one of the best pupils in her class . The teacher , Mr Phillips , was a young man who did not spend much time on teaching , because he was too busy with Prissy Andrews , one of the big girls who was studying for college . “ I guess Gilbert Blythe will be in school today , ” said Diana one morning . “ He’s been visiting his cousins in New Brunswick all summer . He’s awfully handsome , Anne . And he teases the girls something terrible . ” Gilbert Blythe sat across the aisle from Anne . He was a tall boy with curly brown hair , bright hazel eyes and a teasing smile . Anne thought that he was handsome , but she also thought that he was very bold , because he had winked at her across the room . Gilbert was used to having girls look at him . But that afternoon Anne was not looking at him at all . She was gazing out of the window at the blue water of the Lake of Shining Waters and dreaming wonderful dreams . Gilbert reached across the aisle , picked up the end of Anne’s long red plait , held it out at arm’s length and said in a loud whisper : “ Carrots ! Carrots ! ” Then Anne looked at him , and she did more than look . She jumped to her feet , and her eyes flashed with anger and with tears . “ You mean , hateful boy ! ” she cried . “ How dare you ! ” And then she brought her slate down on Gilbert’s head so hard that it cracked across . The slate cracked , not the head . Everybody in the room gasped . Mr Phillips walked down the aisle and laid his hand heavily on Anne’s shoulder . “ Anne Shirley , what does this mean ? ” he said angrily . Anne did not answer . It was too much to expect her to tell the whole school that she had been called carrots . It was Gilbert who spoke up bravely . “ It was my fault , Mr Phillips , ” he said . “ I teased her . ” But Mr Phillips paid no attention to him . He sent Anne to stand in front of the blackboard for the rest of the afternoon . Then he wrote above her head : “ Ann Shirley has a very bad temper . Ann Shirley must learn to control her temper . ” Anne stood there with a white face and her head held high . She did not cry . She did not look once at Gilbert Blythe , and she promised herself that she would never look at him again . When school was over , Gilbert tried to stop her at the door . “ I’m awfully sorry I made fun of your hair , Anne , ” he whispered . “ Honest I am . Don’t be mad for keeps now . ” Anne swept past him without a look . “ I shall never forgive Gilbert Blythe , ” she told Diana on the way home . “ And Mr Phillips spelled my name without an E , too . The iron has entered into my soul , Diana . ”
