The next day things got worse . At lunchtime the pupils often ran to a spruce wood on a hill , where they picked the sweet gum from the trees . That day Mr Phillips had said that anyone who came back late would be punished . When somebody shouted that the master was coming , they all ran back to school . Anne had been wandering at the far end of the wood with a crown of wild lilies on her hair , and she arrived last of all , together with a group of boys . Mr Phillips did not want to punish a dozen boys , but he had to punish somebody . “ Anne Shirley , since you seem to be so fond of the boys ’ company , you can sit with them this afternoon , ” he said . “ Take those flowers out of your hair and sit with Gilbert Blythe . ” Anne went white . She sat down beside Gilbert , put her head down on her desk and did not lift it all afternoon . At one point Gilbert slipped a little pink sweet heart under her arm . It had the words “ You are sweet ” on it in gold letters . Anne picked it up , dropped it on the floor and crushed it to powder under her heel . When school was over , she took all her books out of her desk and carried them home . “ I’m not going back to school any more , ” she told Marilla . Marilla could not make her change her mind , so in the end she went to ask Mrs Rachel for advice . Mrs Rachel had brought up ten children , and she said that Anne should stay at home until she was ready to go back of her own accord , because the less fuss was made , the better . So Anne stayed at home . She did her lessons by herself , played with Diana after school and promised herself every day that she would hate Gilbert Blythe until her death . IX . Raspberry Cordial October came , and the maples and birches around Green Gables turned red and gold . One Saturday Marilla had to go to a meeting in Carmody , and she told Anne that she could invite Diana to spend the afternoon and have tea with her . “ You can use the brown tea set and open the little yellow jar of cherry jam , ” said Marilla . “ And there’s half a bottle of raspberry cordial on the second shelf of the sitting - room cupboard . You and Diana can have some of it , if you like , with a cake in the afternoon . ” Anne was delighted . She imagined herself sitting at the head of the table and pouring the tea like a real lady . When Diana arrived in her second - best dress , the two girls shook hands as seriously as if they had never met before . They talked about the weather and about the apple harvest , and then they went out to the orchard and ate apples until it was time to go in . Anne looked for the raspberry cordial in the cupboard . She found a bottle on the second shelf , poured a large glass of the bright red drink for Diana and put it on the table .
