Many people loved him , but others did not trust him . Once , when he entered the smoking room of a club , the Duke of Berwick and another gentleman stood up and walked out . After he turned twenty - five , there were stories that he had been seen fighting with sailors in low drinking places near the river . Young men who had been his close friends seemed to fall into ruin . Women who had loved him went pale when he came into a room . And yet his money and his charming smile protected him . Society has never been very ready to believe bad things about people who are both rich and charming . In old Italy , men had killed their enemies with poison in a glove , a fan or a golden chain . Dorian Gray had been poisoned by a book . XI . The Face of His Soul It was the ninth of November , the day before his thirty - eighth birthday , as he often remembered afterwards . He was walking home at about eleven o’clock from Lord Henry’s house , wrapped in heavy furs , because the night was cold and foggy . Near his own house a man passed him in the mist , walking quickly with a bag in his hand . It was Basil Hallward . A strange fear came over Dorian , and he went on without a sign , but Basil had seen him and hurried after him . “ Dorian , what luck ! ” he cried . “ I have been waiting for you in your library since nine o’clock . I am going to Paris by the midnight train , and I wanted to see you before I left . Let me come in for a moment . I have something important to say to you . ” They went into the library , where a fire was burning . The painter sat down and looked at Dorian with a grave face . “ I must speak to you seriously , Dorian , ” he said . “ The most dreadful things are being said about you in London . ” “ I don’t want to hear them , Basil . I love scandals about other people , but scandals about myself don’t interest me . ” “ They must interest you , Dorian . I don’t believe these stories , and I can’t believe them when I see you , because sin writes itself across a man’s face , and your face is pure and innocent . But why does a man like the Duke of Berwick leave the room when you come in ? Why is your friendship so fatal to young men ? There was that poor boy in the army who killed himself , and you were his great friend . There was Sir Henry Ashton , who had to leave England with a ruined name . What about Adrian Singleton and his dreadful end , and Lady Gwendolen , Harry’s sister ? Not one decent woman in London will drive with her in the park now . People say that you ruin everyone you become close to . I told them it was absurd , that I knew you well , but do I really know you ? Before I could answer that , I should have to see your soul . ” “ To see my soul ! ” cried Dorian , jumping up from the sofa , white with fear .
