“ You nearly committed a terrible crime , my man , ” said Dorian sternly . “ Let this be a warning to you not to take revenge into your own hands . Go home and put that gun away . ” Then he turned and walked slowly down the street . James Vane stood there trembling , and after a little while , a dark shape crept along the wall towards him . It was the woman from the bar . “ Why didn’t you kill him , you fool ? ” she whispered . “ He has lots of money , and he is as bad as bad can be . ” “ He is not the man I am looking for , ” answered James . “ The man I want must be nearly forty now , and this one is only a boy . ” The woman laughed bitterly . “ Only a boy , is he ? It is nearly eighteen years since Prince Charming made me what I am . They say he has sold himself to the devil for a pretty face . He hasn’t changed much since then , but I have . ” “ You are lying ! ” “ Before God , I am telling the truth , ” she said . James Vane ran to the corner of the street , but Dorian Gray had disappeared . When he looked back , the woman had disappeared too . XIV . The Hare A week later Dorian was sitting with his guests in the glass garden room at Selby Royal , his house in the country . The pretty Duchess of Monmouth was pouring tea , and Lord Henry was lying in a wicker chair , watching them . “ Our friend is talking about giving new names to everything , ” said Dorian , “ so I think we should give him a new name : he is Prince Paradox . ” “ I won’t hear of it , and I refuse the title , ” laughed Lord Henry . “ Then defend your throne , Harry , ” said the duchess . “ I give the truths of tomorrow . ” “ I prefer the mistakes of today , ” she answered . “ And you value beauty far too much , Harry . ” “ How can you say that , Gladys ? I admit that I think it is better to be beautiful than to be good . But on the other hand , no one is more ready than I am to admit that it is better to be good than to be ugly . ” “ And does his way of thinking make you happy , Mr Gray ? ” asked the duchess . “ I have never searched for happiness . Who wants happiness ? I have searched for pleasure . ” “ And have you found it , Mr Gray ? ” “ Often , too often , ” said Dorian , and he got up to fetch her some orchids from the far end of the room . A few minutes later they heard a low cry and the sound of a heavy fall . Lord Henry ran through the palms and found Dorian lying on the floor in a faint . When he came to himself , he trembled and asked if he was safe . He insisted on coming down to dinner , because he did not want to be alone . He was wildly cheerful at the table , but now and then a wave of terror ran through him . Against the glass of the window , white like a handkerchief , he had seen the face of James Vane watching him .
