“ I suppose you have come about the accident , Thornton , ” said Dorian , taking out his cheque book . “ Was the poor fellow married ? If he had a wife or children , I will send them any money they need . ” “ We don’t know who he is , sir , because he wasn’t one of our men . He looks like a sailor , sir , with pictures on both his arms . We found some money and a gun on him , but no name . ” The pen fell from Dorian’s hand , and a terrible hope rushed through him . “ Where is the body ? I must see it at once . ” In less than a quarter of an hour he was riding hard through the dark park to the farm . The body was lying on some sacks in an empty stable , with a handkerchief over the face . Dorian could not bring himself to touch it , and he told a farm worker to take the handkerchief away . Then he stepped forward , and a cry of joy broke from his lips . The man who had been shot in the bushes was James Vane . He stood there for some minutes looking at the dead body . As he rode home , his eyes were full of tears , because he knew that he was safe . XV . The Last Night “ There is no use telling me that you are going to be good , ” cried Lord Henry , dipping his white fingers into a bowl of rose water . “ You are quite perfect , so please don’t change . ” They were having dinner at Lord Henry’s house in town a few months later . “ No , Harry , I have done too many dreadful things in my life , ” said Dorian , “ and I am not going to do any more . I began my good actions yesterday , when I spared someone . She was a village girl called Hetty , and she was wonderfully like Sibyl Vane . We had planned to go away together this morning , but I decided to leave her as innocent as I had found her . ” “ I can finish your little story for you , ” said Lord Henry , laughing . “ You gave her good advice and broke her heart . She will marry some rough farmer , and because she once loved you , she will despise her husband and be miserable . As a good action , I cannot say that I think much of it . ” “ Harry , you are horrible ! I don’t care what you say , because I know I was right . I want to be better , and I am going to be better . Tell me what is happening in town . ” “ People are still talking about poor Basil’s disappearance , ” said Lord Henry , “ and before that they had my own divorce and Alan Campbell’s suicide . The French police say that Basil never arrived in Paris . ” “ What do you think has happened to him ? ” asked Dorian , wondering how he could talk about it so calmly . “ I have no idea , and if he is dead , I don’t want to think about him . Death is the only thing that ever frightens me . ”
