Then he turned to the painter with a red , angry face . “ You like your art better than your friends , Basil . How long will you like me ? Till I have my first wrinkle , I suppose . I know now that when a man loses his good looks , he loses everything . Lord Henry is perfectly right : youth is the only thing worth having . Why should the picture keep what I must lose ? Why did you paint it ? It will laugh at me some day , laugh at me horribly ! ” Hot tears came into his eyes , and he threw himself on the sofa and hid his face in the cushions . “ This is your doing , Harry , ” said the painter bitterly . Lord Henry shrugged his shoulders . “ It is the real Dorian Gray , that is all . ” Basil went to his painting table and picked up a long knife with a thin steel blade . He was going to cut the canvas . With a cry , Dorian ran across the room , pulled the knife out of his hand and threw it to the far end of the studio . “ Don’t , Basil , don’t ! ” he cried . “ It would be murder ! ” “ I am glad you like my work at last , ” said the painter coldly . “ When it is dry , it will be framed and sent to your house . Then you can do what you like with yourself . ” Over tea Lord Henry said that sin was the only real colour left in modern life . “ You really must not say things like that in front of Dorian , Harry , ” said Basil . “ In front of which Dorian ? The one who is pouring our tea , or the one in the picture ? ” Then Lord Henry invited Dorian to the theatre that evening . Basil begged him to stay and have dinner in the studio instead , but Dorian looked across at Lord Henry and shook his head . “ Then I shall stay with the real Dorian , ” said Basil sadly , looking at the picture . As they were leaving , he called after his friend , “ Remember what I asked you in the garden this morning , Harry . I trust you . ” “ I wish I could trust myself , ” said Lord Henry , laughing . When the door had closed behind them , the painter lay down on a sofa with a look of pain on his face . III . A Sad Old Story At half past twelve the next day , Lord Henry walked over to visit his uncle , Lord Fermor , a rough but friendly old man who had never married . He found him in an old shooting coat , reading The Times and complaining about it . “ Well , Harry , what brings you out so early ? ” said the old gentleman . “ I suppose you want money . Young people nowadays imagine that money is everything . ” “ Yes , Uncle George , and when they grow older they know it . But I don’t want money . It is only people who pay their bills who want money , and I never pay mine . What I want is information , and not useful information , of course , but useless information . Tell me about Dorian Gray . He is the grandson of the last Lord Kelso , I believe , and his mother was Lady Margaret Devereux . ”
