He thought for a moment . “ Can you remember any great mistake that you made when you were young , Duchess ? ” “ A great many , I’m afraid , ” she cried . “ Then make them all over again , ” he said seriously . “ To get back your youth , you only have to repeat your follies . Nowadays most people die of a slow kind of common sense . They find out too late that the only things one never regrets are one’s mistakes . ” A laugh went round the table , and Lord Henry played with the idea . He threw it into the air and changed it , let it run away and caught it again . He knew that Dorian’s eyes were fixed on him , and that made him even more brilliant . Dorian sat like someone under a spell , with smiles running over his lips and wonder growing in his eyes . When the guests began to leave , Lord Henry said that he was going for a walk in the park . At the door Dorian touched his arm . “ Let me come with you , ” he said quietly . “ But I thought you had promised to go and see Basil Hallward . ” “ I would rather come with you . Yes , I feel I must come with you . And you must promise to talk to me all the time , because nobody talks as wonderfully as you do . ” “ Ah , I have talked enough for today , ” said Lord Henry , smiling . “ All I want now is to look at life . You may come and look at it with me , if you like . ” IV . Sibyl Vane One afternoon a month later , Dorian Gray was waiting in the little library of Lord Henry’s house in Mayfair . Lord Henry was always late on principle , and his principle was that being on time was a thief of time . When he finally arrived , he explained that he had been looking at a piece of old silk and had argued about the price for hours . “ Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing , ” he said , and he lay down on the sofa with a cigarette . “ Never marry , Dorian . Men marry because they are tired , and women because they are curious . Both are disappointed . ” “ I don’t think I am likely to marry , Harry , because I am too much in love . I am in love with an actress , and her name is Sibyl Vane . ” “ Never heard of her . ” “ No one has , but people will one day , because she is a genius . It would never have happened if I had not met you , Harry . You filled me with a wild wish to know everything about life . One evening I went out to look for some adventure , and I walked east until I lost my way in a maze of dirty streets . At about half past eight I passed a silly little theatre with bright lights outside . A fat man in the most amazing waistcoat I have ever seen was standing at the door , with a huge diamond in the middle of a dirty shirt . ‘ Have a box , my lord ? ’ he said . I don’t know why , but I went in and paid a whole guinea for a box . If I hadn’t gone in , I should have missed the greatest romance of my life . ”
