When Dorian had gone , Lord Henry closed his eyes and began to think . Few people had ever interested him as much as Dorian Gray . The boy’s mad love for someone else did not make him jealous at all . It pleased him , because it made Dorian a more interesting study . To a large extent the boy was his own creation . Other young men waited for life to show them its secrets , but Dorian had learned them early , from Lord Henry’s own words . It was wonderful to watch him , and it did not matter how it all ended . When Lord Henry came home after midnight , he found a telegram on the hall table . It was from Dorian Gray , and it told him that Dorian was engaged to be married to Sibyl Vane . V . Brother and Sister “ Mother , Mother , I am so happy ! ” whispered the girl , and she hid her face in the lap of the tired woman who sat in the only armchair of their poor little sitting room . “ I am so happy , and you must be happy too ! ” Mrs Vane put her thin , white hands on her daughter’s head . “ Happy ? ” she repeated . “ I am only happy , Sibyl , when I see you act . You must not think of anything but your acting . Mr Isaacs has been very good to us , and we owe him money . He has lent us fifty pounds to pay our debts and to buy clothes for James . ” “ Money , Mother ? What does money matter , when love is more than money ? ” Sibyl went to the window and laughed . “ We don’t need Mr Isaacs any more , because Prince Charming rules our life now , and I love him . ” “ Foolish child , you don’t even know his name , ” said her mother . Then she added that the young man might be rich , and that if he was rich , they should think of marriage . Sibyl did not listen , because she was thinking of her prince , and of his kiss , which still burned on her mouth . At that moment the door opened , and her brother came in . James Vane was a heavy young man of sixteen with rough brown hair and large , clumsy hands , and nobody would have guessed that he was the brother of such a graceful girl . He was going to sail to Australia that night , and he had come to take his sister for a last walk . “ I don’t suppose I shall ever see this horrid London again , ” he said . “ I only want to make enough money to take you and Sibyl off the stage , because I hate it . ” While Sibyl ran upstairs to get ready , James turned to his mother . “ I hear that a gentleman comes to the theatre every night and goes behind the stage to talk to her , ” he said . “ Who is he ? ” “ He is a perfect gentleman , and he sends her the loveliest flowers , ” answered Mrs Vane calmly . “ He has not told us his real name yet . I think that is quite romantic of him . He is probably a member of the upper classes . ” “ Then watch over Sibyl , Mother , ” cried the young man .
