VI . Juliet That evening Lord Henry and Basil Hallward met for dinner at a small hotel before the play . When Lord Henry told him the news , Basil could hardly believe it . “ Dorian engaged to an actress ? ” he cried . “ It is impossible , because Dorian is far too sensible . ” “ Dorian is far too wise not to do foolish things now and then , my dear Basil , ” said Lord Henry . “ Besides , whenever a man does a really stupid thing , it is always for the noblest reasons . ” “ I hope the girl is good , Harry . ” “ Oh , she is better than good , she is beautiful . I hope that Dorian will make this girl his wife , love her madly for six months , and then suddenly fall in love with someone else . He would be a wonderful study . ” “ You don’t mean a single word of that , Harry . You are much better than you pretend to be . ” Then Dorian himself came in , flushed with happiness . He told them that he had kissed Sibyl in the little room behind the stage after she had played Rosalind , and that she had thrown herself on her knees and kissed his hands . “ I have been right , Basil , haven’t I , to find my wife in Shakespeare’s plays ? ” he said . “ When I am with her , I am sorry for all that Harry has taught me . Her trust makes me faithful , and her belief makes me good . ” “ When we are happy , we are always good , ” said Lord Henry , “ but when we are good , we are not always happy . ” “ Ah , but what do you mean by good , Harry ? ” cried the painter . “ To be good is to be in harmony with oneself , ” answered Lord Henry . “ Being forced to be in harmony with others is what I call discord . ” Then he looked at his watch . “ But let us go to the theatre . I love acting , because it is so much more real than life . ” The theatre was crowded and very hot that night . At last Sibyl Vane stepped on to the stage , and everybody was silent . She was certainly lovely , and there was something of a young deer in her shy grace and her frightened eyes . Basil jumped to his feet and began to clap , and Dorian sat without moving , as if in a dream . But as soon as she began to speak , something was wrong . Her voice was lovely , but every word sounded false . She said Juliet’s beautiful lines like a schoolgirl who had learned them by heart . She seemed to feel nothing at all . Dorian grew pale as he watched her , and his friends did not dare to say a word to him . In the famous balcony scene she was even worse . By the end of the second act , the audience had begun to talk loudly and to whistle .
