I . Poor Miss Taylor Emma Woodhouse was handsome , clever and rich , with a pleasant home and a happy nature , and she had lived nearly twenty - one years in the world with very little to trouble her . She was the younger of the two daughters of a most kind and loving father . Her mother had died so long ago that Emma could hardly remember her , and her sister Isabella had married young and gone to live in London . So Emma had been the mistress of her father’s house since she was a girl . Her mother’s place had been taken by Miss Taylor , a gentle and sensible woman who had come to teach the two sisters and had stayed for sixteen years . In the end she was less a teacher than a friend , and she and Emma had lived together almost like sisters . Emma had valued Miss Taylor’s opinion very highly , but she had always been guided mostly by her own . The real dangers of Emma’s life , in fact , were these : she had rather too much of her own way , and she was a little too ready to think well of herself . At present , however , these dangers were so hidden that she did not see them as troubles at all . Then Miss Taylor married . Her husband was Mr Weston , a cheerful and good - hearted man of Highbury who had a pretty new house called Randalls , only half a mile away . It was a very good match , and Emma had wished for it . Yet on the evening of the wedding , when she sat alone with her father after dinner , she felt the change deeply . Her father fell asleep by the fire as usual , and the long October evening stretched before her with no one to talk to . Mr Woodhouse was a nervous man who loved his own fire , his own habits and his own small circle of old friends . He hated change of every kind . Marriage , as the cause of change , was always unpleasant to him , and he had never quite forgiven his elder daughter for hers . When he woke up , he looked round the quiet room and sighed . “ Poor Miss Taylor ! I wish she were here again . What a pity it is that Mr Weston ever thought of her ! ” “ I cannot agree with you , papa . Mr Weston is such a good , kind man that he deserves a good wife . And you would not have wanted Miss Taylor to live with us for ever , when she could have a house of her own . ” “ A house of her own ! But where is the use of a house of her own ? This house is three times as large . And you know , my dear , Randalls is such a long way off that we shall hardly ever see her . ” “ It is only half a mile , papa . We shall walk there and visit them very often , and they will come here to see us almost every day . ”
