Omar wants to fly tomorrow to see his sister . She lives in another country , and he has not seen her for a long time . Tonight he packs . He folds his shirts and puts them in a big suitcase . His passport is on the table . It is a small book with his name , his photo , and the date he was born . It also shows the country he comes from . He does not want to lose it , so he slides it between the shirts and closes the suitcase . Then he goes to sleep . In the morning his father comes in with two cups of tea . He asks , " Where is your passport ? " Omar points at the suitcase . His father opens it and finds the book under a blue shirt . He holds the page open . The photo is Omar . The name is Omar . Omar smiles , because the passport is still there . His father does not smile yet . At the airport , he says , the big suitcase will leave Omar's hands . It will ride in the plane in a place Omar cannot open . If the passport stays inside , Omar cannot show it to anyone . He needs it in the small bag that stays with him . Omar understands . He wanted the book to be safe , and a closed suitcase felt safe . It is not safe if he cannot reach it . He lifts the passport out . Last night he also made a paper copy of the photo page . He puts the real book and the copy in the small bag , in a pocket with a zip . Then he takes a photo of the page and sends it to his own email , so one more copy is not on paper at all . He closes the suitcase again . The shirts stay in it . The passport does not . At the airport a woman at the desk asks for his passport . Omar opens the small bag . For a second his fingers find only the paper copy , and his hands go cold . Then he feels the book beside it . He gives her the real one . She looks at the photo , then at his face , then at his name . They match . She nods and gives the book back . Omar puts it in the zip pocket again , not in the suitcase , and walks toward the plane . His sister is waiting on the other side of this flight . The little book is still with him .
