Pandora drops the lid and jumps up . She looks around for Epimetheus . It is dark , and she can’t see well . But she hears a horrible buzzing , like big flies or giant mosquitoes . Things are flying all around the room . Slowly , her eyes get used to the dark . Now she can see a crowd of ugly little shapes . They have wings like bats , and very long stings in their tails . They look very , very unkind . One of them stung Epimetheus . Soon Pandora screams too . She is in pain , and she is afraid . And she is much louder than Epimetheus ! A horrible little thing is sitting on her forehead . It is going to sting her again ! But Epimetheus runs to her and brushes it away . What are these ugly things ? They are the Troubles , the whole family of them . There are bad feelings , like anger . There are lots of worries . There are more than a hundred and fifty kinds of sadness . There are many kinds of illness . And there are more kinds of naughtiness than I can tell you . Everything that makes people sad or ill was in that box . Somebody gave the box to the two children to keep safe . That was the plan : keep the box closed , and nobody in the world will ever cry . But now the Troubles are out , and they fill the cottage . The children want them to go away . So they open the doors and windows . And the Troubles do go away . They fly out into the world , and they sting all the other children . For many days after that , nobody smiles . And other strange things happen too . Before , flowers never died . Now , after a day or two , they hang their heads and lose their leaves . And the children begin to grow older , day by day . In time , they are young men and women . Then they are mothers and fathers , and then old people . And it all begins with one little look in a box . VIII . Tap , Tap Naughty Pandora and almost as naughty Epimetheus stay in their cottage . The Troubles stung them both , and it hurts a lot . It is the first pain since the world began . And they are very cross , with themselves and with each other . Epimetheus sits in a corner with his back to Pandora . Pandora lies on the floor with her head on the horrible box . She cries and cries . Her heart is breaking . Suddenly , there is a small knock on the inside of the lid . Tap , tap ! “ What is that ? ” cries Pandora . She lifts her head . Epimetheus doesn’t answer . Maybe he doesn’t hear it , or maybe he is too cross . “ You are very unkind , ” says Pandora , and she cries again . “ Why don’t you speak to me ? ” Tap , tap ! There it is again ! It sounds like the little hand of a fairy . It knocks softly , as if it is playing . “ Who are you ? ” asks Pandora . She wants to know again , just a little . “ Who are you , in this naughty box ? ”
