She grew ashamed . She could not think of either Darcy or Wickham without feeling that she had been blind , unfair and foolish . “ How badly I have acted ! ” she cried . “ I , who was so proud of my good sense ! I , who have so often laughed at the kindness of my sister ! How shameful this is ! Yet how just ! Had I been in love , I could not have been more wretchedly blind . But vanity , not love , has been my folly . Pleased that one man chose me , and offended that the other did not , I have chosen to be foolish and unfair . Till this moment I never knew myself . ” She turned to the part about Jane and read it again . She had to admit that Jane’s feelings , though strong , had always been hidden under a calm face . And when she read what he said of her family , her shame was deep . She could not deny the justice of it . She thought of the Netherfield ball , her mother , her sisters , and Mary at the piano . Two hours passed before she went back to the house . Both men from Rosings had called while she was out to say goodbye , and she was glad that she had missed them . A week later she left Hunsford . Charlotte said goodbye to her with real feeling . Elizabeth was sorry to leave her friend with such people , but Charlotte did not ask for pity . They are going to Brighton for the summer ! I do so want Papa to take us all there . And Wickham is not going to marry Miss King . She has gone to her uncle in Liverpool . Wickham is safe . ” “ And Miss King is safe too , ” thought Elizabeth . That night she told Jane about Mr Darcy’s proposal . Jane’s surprise did not last long , because she loved her sister so much that any man’s love for Lizzy seemed quite natural to her . But she was sorry for Mr Darcy . When she heard the truth about Mr Wickham , she was even more upset . She had never believed that there could be so much evil in the world , and she tried hard to find an excuse for both men . “ There was surely some great fault in the way both of them were brought up , ” said Elizabeth . “ One has got all the goodness , and the other all the look of it . ”
