“ His guilt and his low birth seem to be one and the same , by your account , ” said Elizabeth angrily , and she turned away . The rest of the evening brought her little comfort . Mr Collins found out that Mr Darcy was Lady Catherine’s nephew . He insisted on going to speak to him , although his cousin begged him not to , and Mr Darcy listened to him with cold surprise and walked away . At supper Mrs Bennet talked loudly to Lady Lucas about how soon Jane would marry Mr Bingley . She said how rich he was and how much his sisters loved Jane , and she said that the younger girls would now meet other rich men . Mr Darcy was sitting opposite , and when Elizabeth saw his serious face , she grew red with shame . Then Mary was asked to play , and she sang . Her voice was weak and her manner was proud , and when she began a second song , Elizabeth looked at her father in despair . Secondly , I am sure that it will add very greatly to my happiness . Thirdly , and I should perhaps have said this earlier , it is the advice of the very noble lady whom I have the honour of serving . ” He went on to say that he had come to choose a wife from among the sisters because one day their home would be his . He did not care about money , he said , and he would never mention her small fortune after they were married . “ You are too hasty , sir , ” cried Elizabeth . “ You forget that I have made no answer . Thank you for the honour of your offer , but I must refuse it . ” Mr Collins did not lose heart . He had heard that young ladies often refused a man the first time , even when they meant to accept him in the end , and he told her so .
