Elizabeth said what she could . But she felt that her friend had given up every better feeling for money and a house , and she was sure that Charlotte could never be happy in the life she had chosen . Mrs Bennet was even more upset , because one day Charlotte would be mistress of Longbourn and she herself would be turned out . Mr Bennet took the whole matter very differently . “ So , Lizzy , ” he said one day , “ your sister is crossed in love , I find . Next to being married , a girl likes to be crossed in love a little now and then . It gives her something to think of , and it makes her a little special among her friends . When is your turn to come ? Here are officers enough in Meryton to break the hearts of all the young ladies in the country . Let Wickham be your man . He is a pleasant fellow , and he would leave you in a most charming way . ” VI . A Winter of Letters At Christmas Mrs Bennet’s brother , Mr Gardiner , came to spend a few days at Longbourn with his wife . Mr Gardiner was a sensible , well - mannered man who earned his living in trade in London . His wife was a clever , pleasant woman , and the two eldest girls loved her dearly . Mrs Gardiner soon saw that her second niece liked Mr Wickham , and before she left , she spoke to her kindly . “ You are too sensible to fall in love just because you are warned against it , ” she said . “ So I am not afraid of speaking openly . He has no money , and you have none either . It would be very foolish to let a young man like that win your heart . ” “ My dear aunt , this is being serious indeed . ” “ Yes , and I hope you will be serious too . ” “ Well , then , you need not be afraid . I will take care of myself , and of Mr Wickham too . He shall not be in love with me , if I can stop it . ” When the Gardiners went back to London , they took Jane with them . Jane hoped , without saying so , that she might see Mr Bingley there . She called on his sister soon after she arrived , but Miss Bingley was cool and said very little . For two weeks Jane waited at home every morning for her to return the visit . When she came at last , she stayed only a few minutes , and she did not hide that she had no wish to come again . “ My dearest Lizzy , ” Jane wrote , “ I must admit that I was wrong about Miss Bingley . I am sure now that she never really cared for me . I cannot understand it , and I will not think about it any more . I only know that her brother is in London , and that he has not come to see me . ”
