Within half an hour Rose and Oliver were at Mr Brownlow’s door . Rose went in alone first , and she found Mr Brownlow sitting with Mr Grimwig . When she told them that Oliver was safe and good , and had never been a thief , Mr Brownlow jumped up with joy . A moment later Oliver was in the room , and the old gentleman took him in his arms . Then Mrs Bedwin , the old housekeeper , came in , and she hugged and kissed him and cried over him . “ How pale he has grown ! ” she said . “ But the same sweet eyes , only not so sad . I have seen them every day , side by side with those of my own dear children , dead and gone since I was a young creature . ” Mr Grimwig said very little , but he went up to Oliver and shook him warmly by both hands . Then , in another room , Rose told Mr Brownlow all that Nancy had said . He listened with great attention . When she spoke of Monks , his face became very serious , as if the story had touched some secret of his own . “ We must say nothing to Oliver yet , ” he said at last . “ And we must meet this brave girl on London Bridge . ” XIV . London Bridge Some time before this , two travellers had arrived in London from Oliver’s home town . They were Noah Claypole and Charlotte , who had stolen money from Mr Sowerberry’s shop and run away together . They went to a low inn called the Three Cripples , and there Fagin found them . He soon learned their secret , and he offered Noah work . Noah gave his name as Morris Bolter , and he was delighted when Fagin explained his first job . He had to wait in the streets for small children whom their mothers had sent out on errands with money , and take it from them . Fagin needed new helpers , because he had just lost his best one . The Artful Dodger had been caught trying to steal a silver snuff box , and he was going to be sent to the colonies for life . In court the Dodger had made jokes , insulted the magistrate and demanded his rights as an Englishman , and Charley Bates was very proud of him . Fagin had also been watching Nancy closely . On the next Sunday night , just before eleven o’clock , she put on her bonnet and tried to go out , but Sikes would not let her . “ Let me go , ” she said . “ Only for an hour . Let me go out ! ” Sikes held her in the room until midnight , and she cried and fought him . Fagin saw this , and he became sure that Nancy had a secret . He thought that perhaps she had found a new lover and wanted to leave Sikes . If that was true , perhaps he could use her against Sikes , whom he had begun to hate . So he decided to have her followed . “ I want you to follow a woman , ” he told Noah . “ Tell me where she goes , whom she sees and , if possible , what she says . ”
