“ I will tell you what I did yesterday , ” he said . “ I got the sexton , who was digging Edgar’s grave , to remove the earth from her coffin , and I opened it . I saw her face again , and it is hers yet . I struck one side of her coffin loose and covered it up again . When I am laid there , I have bribed the sexton to pull it away and slide out the side of mine too . By the time Edgar Linton gets to us , he will not know which is which . ” “ You were very wicked ! ” I said . “ Were you not ashamed to disturb the dead ? ” “ I disturbed nobody , Nelly , ” he replied . “ She has disturbed me , night and day , through eighteen years . Now I shall be more at peace . ” Then he told me that on the night after her burial he had gone to the churchyard to dig her up again . As he worked , he felt that she was standing beside him , not under the ground but above it . Since then he had felt her near him always , but he could never see her . It had been a slow torture for eighteen years . Cathy came down in her hat and cloak . She kissed me goodbye , and her lips felt as cold as ice . “ Come and see me , Ellen , ” she whispered . “ Don’t forget . ” “ Take care you do no such thing , Mrs Dean ! ” said Heathcliff . “ When I want to speak to you , I will come here . ” He took her arm and led her away down the garden . I watched them from the window until the trees hid them from my sight . XIV . The Burnt Books I have not seen Cathy since that evening , because Joseph would not let me into the house when I called . All I know about her life at the Heights I have heard from Zillah , the housekeeper , whom I met on the moor a few weeks before you came . Linton was dying when Cathy arrived there , and Heathcliff would not send for the doctor . Cathy nursed him alone , day and night , and nobody in the house helped her . One night she knocked on Zillah’s door and asked her to tell the master that his son was dying . When Heathcliff came , Linton was already dead . “ How do you feel now ? ” he asked her . “ He is safe , and I am free , ” she answered . “ I should feel well . But you have left me so long to struggle against death alone , that I feel and see only death ! ” For two weeks after the funeral she stayed in her room . Heathcliff went up only once , to show her Linton’s will . The poor boy had been frightened into leaving everything he owned to his father , including everything that had been hers . So now Heathcliff was the master of the Grange as well as the Heights , and Cathy had no money and no friends . When she came downstairs at last , she was cold and proud with everyone in the house . Hareton tried to be kind to her in his rough way . Once , when she was reading , he touched her golden curls very gently , as if they were a bird , and she jumped up and told him to keep away . After that he was sullen with her , and she was rude to them all .
