Her brother was horrified when he discovered it . He loved his sister dearly , and he knew that Heathcliff’s good manners hid a cruel heart . If Mr Edgar died without a son , Isabella would inherit the Grange and all his money . The idea that it might fall into Heathcliff’s hands made him sick . Mrs Linton was also angry with Isabella , but for different reasons . One morning , when they were all sitting together , she told Heathcliff the secret in front of the poor girl . “ Heathcliff , here is someone who loves you more than I do , ” she said , laughing . “ My sister - in - law is breaking her heart for you . She told me so herself yesterday . Don’t run away , Isabella ! ” Isabella tried to escape , but Mrs Linton held her by the arm . She went white and then red , and at last she pulled herself free and ran out of the room in tears . Heathcliff watched her go with a cold smile . “ Is it true ? ” he asked when she had gone . “ I told you the truth , ” said Mrs Linton . “ But don’t think about her . I like her too well to let you take her and devour her . ” “ And I like her too badly to try , ” he answered , “ unless it is in a very ghoulish way . If I lived alone with that pale , waxen face , you would hear of strange things . ” Then he was quiet for a moment , and he asked as if by chance whether Isabella was her brother’s heir . I saw him think about it , and I did not like it . That evening I watched him on the road , and I knew from his eyes that he had begun to plan something wicked . I decided to keep a careful watch on him , and on the young lady too . VIII . The Key in the Fire The next time Heathcliff came to the Grange , I was at the kitchen window , and I saw him walk across the yard . Miss Isabella was in the garden , feeding the pigeons . He went straight up to her , looked round to see that nobody was watching , and took her in his arms . She turned her face away , but he held her fast and kissed her . “ Judas ! Traitor ! ” I said aloud , and at that moment Mrs Linton came up behind me . She had seen it all from the window , and her eyes were bright with anger . When Heathcliff came in , she began to quarrel with him at once . “ If you like Isabella , you shall marry her , ” she said bitterly . “ But do you like her ? Tell me the truth , Heathcliff ! ” “ I have a right to kiss her if she chooses , ” he answered . “ I am not your husband , so you need not be jealous of me . ” Then he came very close to her . “ You have treated me wickedly , ” he said . “ Yes , wickedly ! And if you think that I will suffer it without revenge , you are a fool . Thank you for telling me your sister’s secret . I swear that I will make the most of it . ” I did not wait to hear any more . I ran to find Mr Edgar and told him what was happening in the kitchen . He came down at once , very pale , and stood in the doorway .
