Jo had always thought that her patient mother was never angry . She listened in wonder . Mrs March explained that her husband had helped her a great deal . “ When I was ready to say something sharp , he used to look at me in a certain way , and I remembered . Then I stopped . ” Jo had often seen her father put his finger to his lips and look kindly at her mother , but she had never understood what it meant until now . She thought about the long years in which her mother had fought the same battle , quietly and alone , and her own trouble seemed a little smaller . If Marmee could learn to rule her temper , then perhaps she could learn it too . “ Mother , I’ll try to be better , ” she said . “ I was so angry that I nearly let her drown . I’ll never let my temper go so far again , if I can help it . ” “ That is the right way to begin , my dear , ” said Mrs March . “ Remember this day , and the next time you feel the passion rising , think of it . ” Amy woke up and held out her arms with a smile . Jo did not say a word , but she held her sister close and kissed her , and everything was forgiven and forgotten in one warm hug . V . Meg Goes to Vanity Fair In April Meg went to stay for two weeks with her friend Annie Moffat . The Moffats were rich and fashionable , and Meg was very excited . Her sisters helped her to pack her few plain dresses , and Amy lent her a little blue box of ribbons . The Moffat girls were kind , and Meg enjoyed the shopping , the drives and the visits . But soon she began to feel ashamed of her old clothes . The other girls wore new dresses every day , and they looked at Meg’s thin white muslin with pity . On the night of a small party , a box of flowers arrived for her . The note was from Mother and the flowers were from Laurie , but the girls laughed and asked Meg whether she had a lover . Later that evening Meg heard two ladies talking behind a screen . “ How old is he ? ” asked one . “ Sixteen or seventeen , I should say , ” said the other . “ It would be a grand thing for one of those girls , wouldn’t it ? Mrs March has made her plans , I dare say , and she will play her cards well , although it is early . The girl evidently doesn’t think of it yet . ” Meg’s cheeks burned . They were talking about Laurie and his money , and they believed that her mother wanted to catch him for one of her daughters . Meg was too proud to show her feelings , but she lay awake for a long time that night . On the next big evening , the Moffat girls offered to dress her up . Belle lent her a blue silk dress that was so tight that she could hardly breathe . They curled her hair , put powder on her face and gave her high - heeled blue boots . When Meg looked in the mirror , she hardly knew herself . Many people paid her compliments that evening , and she began to enjoy it .
