“ That white place that we came through , ” she whispered at last , “ what was it ? ” “ Well now , you must mean the Avenue , ” said Matthew . “ It’s a kind of pretty place . ” “ Oh , pretty isn’t the right word , and beautiful isn’t the right word either , because it was wonderful . It’s the first thing I ever saw that imagination couldn’t make better . They shouldn’t call it the Avenue . There is no meaning in a name like that . They should call it the White Way of Delight . ” A little later they drove over a hill , and below them lay a long , winding pond . The water was coloured pink and gold and green by the evening light , and frogs were singing in the marsh . Matthew said that it was Barry’s pond , but the girl decided at once that its real name was the Lake of Shining Waters . At last Matthew pointed to a house far away on the hill , among the dark trees . A light was shining in one of its windows . “ That’s Green Gables , up there on the hill , ” he said . “ Oh , I knew it , ” she said . “ I knew it as soon as I saw it . I’ve been pinching myself all day , because I was afraid it was only a dream . But it’s real , and we’re nearly home . ” Matthew moved uncomfortably on his seat . He was glad that Marilla , and not he , would have to tell this child that the home she had longed for was not to be hers after all . III . Not a Boy Marilla came quickly to the door when she heard the buggy . But when she saw the strange little figure in the stiff , ugly dress , with the long red plaits and the eager , shining eyes , she stopped in surprise . “ Matthew Cuthbert , who’s that ? ” she cried . “ Where on earth is the boy ? ” “ There wasn’t any boy , ” said Matthew miserably . “ There was only her , waiting on the platform . ” “ Well , Mrs Spencer didn’t bring a boy , she brought her , because I asked the stationmaster about it , ” Matthew went on . “ And I had to bring her home . She couldn’t be left there , no matter where the mistake had come in . ” The child had been listening , and her face changed as she understood . She dropped her old bag , stepped forward and pressed her hands together . “ You don’t want me ! ” she cried . “ You don’t want me because I’m not a boy ! Nobody ever did want me , and I might have known that it was all too beautiful to last . Oh , what shall I do ? I’m going to burst into tears ! ” And she did , because she sat down on a chair by the table , put her face in her arms and cried as if her heart would break , while Marilla and Matthew looked helplessly at each other across the stove . “ Well , well , there’s no need to cry so much about it , ” said Marilla at last .
