“ Well , this is a nice mess , ” said Marilla . “ That girl will have to be sent back to the asylum . ” “ Well now , she’s a real nice little thing , Marilla , ” said Matthew . “ It’s kind of a pity to send her back when she’s so set on staying here . ” “ Matthew Cuthbert , you don’t mean to say you think we ought to keep her ! ” “ Well now , no , I suppose not , ” said Matthew . “ But you should have heard her talk on the way from the station , because she’s real interesting . ” “ She can talk fast enough , I saw that at once . But that’s nothing in her favour . What good would she be to us ? ” Matthew was quiet for a moment , and then he said , “ We might be some good to her . ” But Marilla decided that the girl would go back the next day , and Matthew went to bed without another word . And upstairs , in the east gable , a lonely , hungry child cried herself to sleep . In the morning Anne woke up and saw that the sun was shining through her window . Outside a big cherry tree was so covered with white flowers that she could hardly see a leaf . Below there were apple trees , a garden full of lilac , a brook in the valley and , far away through a gap in the trees , the blue sea . Anne knelt at the window and looked at it all with delight . For a few minutes she forgot that she was not going to stay . That was where Marilla found her a little later . “ Isn’t it wonderful ? ” said Anne . “ It’s such a lovely world , and the cherry tree outside my window is called the Snow Queen , I’ve decided . I would love to stay here . I can imagine for a little while that I’m going to stay . That’s the good thing about imagining . But the worst of it is that the moment you stop , it hurts . ” “ You’d better get dressed and come down , ” said Marilla , “ and never mind your imaginings . ” At breakfast Anne was much quieter , and when Marilla told her that they would drive over to Mrs Spencer’s that afternoon , she said nothing , but her face went very white . Matthew went out to the barn without a word , and Marilla knew that he still wanted to keep the child . IV . Anne’s Story After dinner Marilla and Anne set off in the buggy . They had five miles to drive , and Marilla decided that she might as well hear the child’s history on the way . “ Oh , what I know about myself isn’t really worth telling , ” said Anne . “ If you’ll let me tell you what I imagine about myself , it will be much more interesting . ” “ No , I don’t want any of your imaginings , so just stick to the facts . Where were you born and how old are you ? ” “ I was eleven last March , ” said Anne with a little sigh . “ And I was born in Bolingbroke , Nova Scotia . My father’s name was Walter Shirley , and he was a teacher at the high school . My mother’s name was Bertha Shirley , and she had been a teacher too . Aren’t Walter and Bertha lovely names ? I’m so glad my parents had nice names . It would be a real disgrace to have a father named Jedediah , wouldn’t it ? ”
