Bois - Guilbert went white , because he had hoped to save Rebecca , and now he would have to fight against her . Rebecca was allowed to send one message , and Higg the son of Snell offered to carry it to her father . She wrote to Isaac and asked him to find Wilfred of Ivanhoe . If Ivanhoe was able to ride , he might come and fight for her . That night , Bois - Guilbert came secretly to Rebecca’s cell . He was in despair . “ Listen to me , Rebecca , ” he said . “ If I refuse to fight , I shall lose my name and my honour , and if I fight , you will die . But there is another way . Perhaps I will not come to the field at all , or , even better , you could come away with me now on my fast horse . We could go to a foreign land , and I would make you a great lady there . ” Rebecca looked at him without fear . “ You brought me to this place , ” she said , “ and you have caused all my troubles . I will not run away with you , now or ever . I would rather die here , with my faith and my honour , than live with you in shame . ” The Templar turned and left the cell without another word . XIV . The King in the Forest While Rebecca waited in her cell at Templestowe , the Black Knight was riding through the forest with Wamba as his guide . They were travelling to Coningsburgh , where Cedric was holding the funeral feast for Athelstane . Ivanhoe , who had been taken to a small monastery after the battle to recover from his wound , had been told to rest there for another day and follow them later . The jester talked and joked all the way . But his eyes were sharp . Suddenly he stopped his horse . “ Sir Knight , ” he said quietly , “ there are men in those bushes ahead . I have seen something move among the leaves twice . If they were honest travellers , they would be on the path . ” The knight closed his helmet just in time . Three arrows flew out of the bushes at once , and one of them struck his helmet so hard that it would have killed him if the steel had not turned it aside . Then six or seven men in armour rode out of the trees and attacked him with their lances , shouting , “ Death to the tyrant ! ” The Black Knight drew his sword and struck down a man with every blow . But a knight in blue armour , who had stayed behind the others , rode forward and drove his lance into the Black Knight’s horse . The horse fell , and its rider fell with it . At that moment Wamba remembered the silver horn which Locksley had given them . He blew it with all his strength , then rushed in with his small sword to help the knight to his feet . The Black Knight put his back against an oak tree and fought on , but there were too many enemies around him , and he was growing tired . When the knight in blue armour charged at him again with a new lance , Wamba ran forward and cut the horse’s leg , so that horse and rider crashed to the ground .
