Nina is cold and hungry . She has walked through a new city all afternoon , and she wants something hot . She sees a small restaurant with a warm light in the window and goes in . A waiter points to an empty table . Nina sits down . She wants soup . She can almost taste it already . The waiter brings a menu . There are no pictures , only words , and some of them are new to her . She sees chicken . She sees salad . Then she sees the word soup . She puts her finger on that line so she will not lose it . The waiter comes back and asks , " Are you ready to order ? " Nina says , " Yes . I would like the soup , please . " She points at the line again . The waiter nods and takes the menu away . Nina waits and drinks a glass of water . She watches the kitchen door . When the waiter returns , the plate in his hands is not a bowl . It is chicken , with rice beside it . This is not what she asked for . She looks at the plate , then at the waiter . " I wanted the soup , " she says . " Not the chicken . " Her voice is quiet , but the words are clear . The waiter looks at his little paper , then at her . " I am sorry , " he says . " The soup . One moment . " He takes the chicken away . Nina sits with empty hands . She thinks she should have said the word twice . Then he comes back with a bowl . The soup is red and hot , and it smells like tomato . He sets it down . " Your soup , " he says . Nina says , " Thank you . " She eats slowly . The first spoonful warms her mouth . She holds the bowl , and her fingers grow warm too . She did not want the chicken . She wanted this . When the bowl is empty , she feels warm again , and the long walk does not matter so much . The waiter brings the bill . Nina pays for the soup and the water . She knows that in some countries people leave extra money for the waiter . That extra money is a tip . She does not know the custom here , and the bill does not tell her , so she does not guess . She says thank you again . The waiter smiles and takes the bill away . Nina steps back into the street . The air is still cold , but the taste of tomato is still in her mouth . She got the soup she wanted .
