Nora lives in a small town in Vermont , and she wants one long walk before the day ends . It is autumn . The leaves are yellow on the trees and brown on the path , and this morning the sky is a clear blue . She puts on a light shirt and looks at her coat on the chair . The coat is heavy . The sun is warm on the window . She leaves the coat where it is and goes out with only her keys . The park is bright . Children run on the grass . A dog shakes water from an old puddle , but Nora does not think about the puddle . She wants to reach the far trees , the ones that are still full of yellow leaves , and stand under them . She walks fast . She does not want to miss this light . Halfway there , a cloud covers the sun . The air changes . It is not winter , and it is not the hot part of the year , but the wind is suddenly cold on her arms . Nora stops and thinks of the coat on the chair . She can go back now . The yellow trees are still ahead , and she wants them more than she wants to be warm , so she keeps walking . At the trees the leaves make a dry sound under her shoes . She looks up . That is when the rain starts . It finds her hair , her shirt , and the back of her neck . People near her open umbrellas . Nora has no umbrella and no coat . She laughs once , because this was her choice , and then she runs to a wooden shelter by the path . Under the roof she is wet and breathing hard , and she can still see the yellow trees through the rain . The morning really was sunny . It just was not the whole day . She waits until the rain is softer , then walks home with her arms tight against her sides . The coat is still on the chair . She puts it on , cold and late , and stands at the window . Through the rain the trees are still yellow . She saw them . Next time the coat comes with her .
