Lena wants to leave the hotel this time . Last year she flew a long way and then saw only the ceiling . A meal sat too long in the heat , and she was ill for days . The flight tomorrow is a second chance . She opens the suitcase for a clean shirt , stops , and pulls the shirt back out . The small bag has to come first . On the table there is a card from her doctor . Some countries ask for vaccines before you enter , and the card says what Lena needs . The card goes into a pocket with her passport . She makes two paper copies of the passport . One stays with her brother . One stays with her . If the original is lost , she can still read every detail . She reads her travel insurance with a pen in her hand . She looks for medical care , a cancelled trip , and a lost bag , and she underlines only what this policy really pays . Care in another country can be expensive , so she wants the truth before she needs it . The emergency number goes into her phone and onto the paper with her brother's copy . If the phone dies , she can still read the number . Water is the part she refuses to forget . In some countries you should not drink from the tap . Lena will buy bottles , and she will say no to ice unless the ice comes from safe water . At a stall she will look for a busy , clean place and eat food that has just been cooked . That is the habit she missed last year . She thinks about heat and mosquitoes next . She packs sunscreen , a hat , and sunglasses , and she will keep drinking water when the day is hot . A repellent with DEET goes in the side pocket . Mosquitoes can carry malaria , dengue , or Zika . Some bite in the evening and some bite during the day , so the bottle is for both . If the card lists medicine for malaria , she will take it as written . Where the risk is real , she will sleep under a net . A small kit holds bandages , something to clean a cut , and the medicine she already uses at home . On the road she will wear a seat belt , and she will not ride a scooter without a helmet . Her money and her phone stay on her , not on a cafe chair . At night , in a street she does not know , she walks with other people . She messages her brother the hotel name and the embassy number . Then she zips the small bag and sets it by the door . The shirt can wait on the chair . Tonight , the part that keeps her well is already done .
