Maya wanted one quiet hour at her desk before the office filled with voices . An email from yesterday was still waiting , and she wanted to answer it while the room was still empty . She left the flat without breakfast . The bus would not wait , and the bread was still in the bag . On the stairs she remembered the old meaning of the word . Breakfast is break and fast : the meal that ends a night without food . This morning she broke nothing . She locked the door and ran . The bus came full . Maya took a small note from the drawer , wrote " Thank you " on it , and stuck it to the side of Anna's screen . Anna saw it , smiled , and went back to her page . The email was still there when the cup was empty . Maya opened it then . Crumbs sat on her sleeve , and Anna was still the only other person in the room . She typed an answer that was slower than the one in her head on the bus . The small note on Anna's screen did not move .
