Elias stood under the station board with a small hard case in his hand . Inside it was the spare part a clinic had asked for , and the clinic opened that morning . The board changed while he watched . His train was cancelled . The next one was too late for the nurse who was waiting . He wanted one thing : to put that case on the clinic desk before the first patient sat down . A long taxi could still do it . He turned toward the line of taxis , and then his phone buzzed . It was Marta , from the same company . She was already driving to that town for a different visit . She had one empty seat . " I can pass the station , " she wrote . " Side door , not the main hall . I cannot wait long . The traffic after the bridge gets slow . " Elias was still thinking about the taxi . He read the message again , then ran . The side door opened onto a wet street . A dark car flashed its lights . Marta leaned across and pushed the passenger door open . " The case goes by your feet , " she said . " Not on the back seat . I have boxes there . " He got in . For a while he kept looking back , as if the train might appear and make this ride look like a mistake . It did not . Marta drove , and she spoke only when she needed a direction . Near the bridge the cars were packed close . She did not complain . She turned into a side street she knew , and the town opened in front of them . The clinic was a low building with the lights already on . A nurse named Idris met them at the door . Elias put the case in his hands and opened it . The part sat in its soft packing , dry and whole . " This is the one , " Idris said . " We can use the machine today . I was ready to send people away . " Marta stayed in the car with the engine on . She still had her own visit . Elias stood on the step with an empty case and no ticket home . Down the hall , Idris was already carrying the part .
