Marco sat at his desk with his laptop open . The fair was yesterday . A paper cup from the hall was still in the bin , and a stack of cards lay by the keyboard . He wanted Lila to answer him . She worked at the label company . The printer in his shop kept eating the sticky labels , and her team made that machine . LinkedIn was open on the screen . He had found her name there after the fair . The photo matched the badge she wore in the hall . He started to type . " Hello , I am Marco from a print shop . I want to tell you about our work , and I hope we can work together . Please look at my page and write back soon . " He stopped . The words sounded like a poster on a wall . At the fair he had not talked like that . At the fair he had said , " It eats the sheet , and then it makes a bad noise . " Imani from the front desk put a folder on the cabinet and read the screen over his shoulder . " She will not answer that , " she said . " You did not write it to her . You wrote it to everybody . " Marco wanted to keep the long note . It looked serious . It had the name of his shop in the first line . He moved the mouse back and forth , and his ears felt hot . Imani did not sit down . She waited with the folder in her arms . He deleted the whole note . Then he wrote again , short this time . He said the printer still ate the labels . He asked if her team knew a way to stop the noise . He used her name , and he used his . He did not ask her to work with the shop . He did not add a file . His finger stayed over the button . Imani did not touch the keyboard . He sent it . The screen showed one word : sent . Nothing came back . Lila might be in a meeting . She might never write . Marco closed the laptop anyway . The long note was gone , and he could not make it long again . Imani pressed the paper cup down in the bin so the lid would shut . " If she writes , tell me what they say about the noise , " she said . " I hear that printer from the front desk every morning . " Marco nodded . He put the spare cards in the drawer and shut it . The fair was over . A short note sat on LinkedIn under Lila's name , and there was still no answer .
