Rosa wanted to read one sentence in her letter before she took it to the post office . She had written the letter at night , under the lamp . In the morning she was not sure of that sentence . The lamp made the paper look yellow , and on yellow paper a pale pencil mark was hard to see . Her father was asleep in the chair by the window . The curtain was closed . He liked it closed , because the sun made that chair too warm , and bright light woke him . Rosa wanted the sentence to be clear . She also wanted him to stay asleep . She wanted both , and the room could not give her both at once . She put her hand on the curtain . If she opened it all the way , the sun would fall across his face . If she left it closed , she would guess at a word , and she did not want to send a guess . She pulled the curtain a little . A narrow line of sunlight came in and lay on the table . It did not reach the chair . She stopped and looked at her father . His eyes were still closed . The light was on the wood , not on him . That was enough , so she did not pull the curtain any farther . Rosa sat down in that line of light . The paper looked white now , and the pale mark was a word she could read . It was the word she had hoped to see . She read it with her finger under the line . Then a cloud passed , and the light left the page . The kitchen grew dim . Rosa held her pen above the paper and waited . She could turn the lamp on . She did not . The lamp was the reason she could not trust the page . She wanted the sun on the words . The cloud moved away . The paper turned white again . She read the sentence a second time , slowly , so she would still know it when the room was dark . She changed nothing . She had only needed to see . Rosa pushed the curtain back to the place where she had found it . She turned the lamp off . The letter lay in the middle of the table . Her father was still asleep . The sentence was no longer a problem .
