Maya needed the high part of her flute tune to sit properly before the evening . A small group was meeting at the community hall , and she promised to play . In the flat , every time she reached those notes , the dog in the flat below started to bark , and she lost the line . She warmed up first on the low , easy bars . Those were fine . The dog ignored them . The trouble started when the tune rose . Maya stood by the shut window , took a breath , and tried again . The first high note came out thin . The second was clearer . Then the bark hit the floor under her feet , sharp and close , and her fingers jumped off the keys . She stopped at once . The dog stopped too . The quiet after the noise felt strange , and her heart was still going fast . Her brother stood in the doorway with his coat half on and his keys in one hand . He heard the same stop from the kitchen . " Leave it , " he said . " Play the quiet part tonight . It is shorter , and that is fine . " Maya looked at the flute . The quiet part was safe . She was tired of starting over , and she did not have much time . For a moment she agreed with him . She could walk to the hall , play only what the dog allowed , and come home without stopping again . She did not put the flute away . She stepped out onto the landing and pulled the flat door almost shut behind her . The stairwell was cool , and the air was a little damp . The stairs turned in a square around an empty middle . Maya stood where she could not see her own door or the dog's door . She set her feet apart , lifted the flute , and played from the bar before the high part , through those notes , and on to the last bar . No bark came up the stairs . The sound felt a little warmer than it did in her bedroom , and she did not run out of breath . When the final note faded , she heard a radio far below and the small tick of the keys under her fingers . She lowered the flute . Her brother was still in the doorway , one hand on the handle , waiting . Maya nodded once , clipped the case shut , and went back in for her shoes .
