Priya wanted the egg to float before Nabil lost interest . He was her nephew , and he sat at her kitchen table with his coat still on . On the walk back from the shop she told him she could make an egg float , and he asked to see it before his mother came to collect him . Now the egg lay at the bottom of a tall glass and did not move . She shook in a little salt and stirred with a spoon . The water went cloudy for a moment , then cleared , and the egg stayed down . Nabil put his chin near the rim . " It is not doing it , " he said . His eyes slid toward the doorway . In the next room the television was still talking , and it would be easy for him to leave . Priya felt hot in the face . She had promised him something small , and the glass made the promise look empty . She could pour the water away , say the egg was a bad one , and send him to the sofa . She kept the glass on the table . At home her mother never used a shy pinch for this trick . She poured salt in a slow stream and stirred until the water could hold the egg . Priya took the salt again and did the same . She tipped it steadily , watched the grains disappear , and kept the spoon moving so they would not sit in a pile at the bottom . The egg shifted against the glass . One end rose a little . Then the whole egg lifted and hung under the surface , pale and quiet . Nabil did not shout . He pulled his hands into his lap , as if a knock on the table would send the egg down again . Priya let him look . Plain water had let the egg sink . This water was salty enough to hold it up . She smiled once , slid a spoon under the egg , and rinsed it at the tap . Then she set it in a bowl and emptied the glass . He had seen the trick . She did not drop the egg back in to show him again .
