Nina stands on a public court , behind the back line . A net cuts the court in two . Omar is on the other side with a yellow ball . No one else is on their court . Nina wants one thing . She wants her ball to go over the net and come down inside the white lines on his side . Her racket feels big in her hand . The grip is damp . She can see the lines , and she can see the white band on top of the net . Omar bounces the ball and hits it to her . The ball comes in slow and high . Nina is quick . She swings too early . The racket meets the ball far in front of her body , and the ball flies long . It goes past the back line on Omar's side and does not touch his court . A woman on the next court looks over , then turns back to her own game . Omar does not tease Nina . He picks up the ball and shows her another one . " Let it bounce , " he says . " Then hit . " Nina moves her feet . They make a small sound on the court . The ground is hard under her shoes . Omar sends the next ball . It is slow again . This time Nina watches it all the way . The ball bounces in front of her . She lets it rise . She takes a short step , and she swings more slowly . She does not try to hit it hard . The ball leaves the strings and goes over the net . It is not a high ball . It comes down inside the line , close to the side of Omar's court . Omar runs . He reaches the ball , but his racket is late . The ball hits the top of the net and falls back on his side . They do not hit it again . Nina lowers her racket . Her shoulder is warm . She smiles a little . She does not look at the next court . Omar walks up to the net and rolls a ball under it , toward her shoes . " You start , " he says . Nina bends and picks the ball up . She walks back to the line . The same net is in front of her . The yellow ball is in her hand . She bounces it and looks up .
