Today is the day Elena's family celebrates her father , and she wants to give him a card before they sit down to eat . The kitchen is already busy . Her mother is putting plates on the table . Her little brother is looking for a clean glass . Elena knows the next part . People start to talk , someone passes the bread , and a small card can sit on a chair until nobody looks at it . She goes to her room . The card is not on the bed . It is not on the desk . She sees pencils , a ruler , and an empty envelope . She made the card this morning with a red pencil . Then she ran for the bus and put her bag on the floor . She does not remember the card after that . " Dinner is nearly ready , " her mother calls from the kitchen . Elena opens her school bag . She takes out a book . She takes out her lunch box . At the bottom there is a folded paper . She pulls it out . It is the card . One corner is bent . She presses the corner flat with her hand and looks at the drawing . On the front she drew their building , a tree , and three people holding hands . Inside she wrote , " Thank you for the walks . " The words are short , and she can still read every one . She does not want to make a speech at the table . She wants her father to read that line while the room is still quiet . She walks back to the kitchen . Her father is at the sink . He is washing his hands . Elena stops for a second because her mouth feels dry . Then she holds the card out to him . " This is for you , " she says . " Please read it now . " He dries his hands on a towel . He takes the card and opens it . He reads the line slowly . Her mother is still holding a plate . Her brother is watching , and nobody is talking yet . " The walks , " her father says . He looks at Elena and smiles . " I like this very much . " He puts the card next to his plate , where he can see it while they eat . Elena sits down . Her hands rest on her knees . She does not say anything else . Her father has the card , and he has read the words .
