Lina stood outside Hana's door with a small box of cookies in both hands . Her room at home was loud in the evenings , and she wanted a quiet table for her books . That morning Hana said , " Come for tea . My grandmother is here . If she likes you , you can use the table by the window . " Lina wanted that yes . She smoothed her coat and knocked . Hana opened the door . Warm air came out , and with it the smell of tea . The hall inside was clean . Shoes sat in a neat row along the wall . A pair of soft slippers waited on the mat . Through the open door Lina could see the window table . Books were stacked at one side . A chair was free . That was the place she wanted . Lina was so glad to be let in that she stepped straight over the mat . Her street shoes hit the wood floor with a small hard sound . She took one more step . She was already inside . Hana's smile stopped . From the next room , an older woman looked up from a low table . She looked at Lina's feet . She did not say hello . Lina looked down too . Every other pair of shoes was still by the door . Hers were not . The cookies were still in her hands . The tea was already in the cups . She could leave . Then she could not ask for the table . She did not want to leave . She wanted to undo that step . Lina walked backward onto the mat . She set the cookies down , pulled her shoes off , and placed them at the end of the row . Her socks were thin , and a toe showed through a small hole . She let it show . " I'm sorry , " she said . " I came in too fast . " Hana breathed out . " Those slippers are yours , " she said . Lina put them on . They were soft . She picked up the cookies and held the box in front of her . She wanted to say hello in the right way , so she waited . The grandmother nodded once . She touched the cushion next to her . " Now , " she said , " you can come in . "
