Have you ever helped someone without asking for money ? This is called volunteering . Volunteering is when you give your time and energy to help a community or an organization . It is a very common activity in many countries , especially in the English - speaking world . Millions of people volunteer every year because they want to make the world a better place . There are many different ways to volunteer . Some people choose to work with animals . They might visit an animal shelter to walk dogs , clean cages , or help feed the animals . These shelters often have very little money , so they depend on volunteers to do these important jobs . It is a great way for people who love animals to spend their free time . Another popular way to volunteer is by helping people in need . Some volunteers work at " soup kitchens , " which are places that provide free meals to people who are homeless or have no money . Other volunteers might visit elderly people who live alone . They sit and talk with them , help them with their shopping , or go for a walk together . This helps the elderly feel less lonely and more connected to their community . Many young people like to volunteer in schools or youth clubs . They might help children with their homework or teach them a new skill like playing football or drawing . This is very good for the students because they get extra help , and it is good for the volunteers because they learn how to be leaders and teachers . Many universities and employers like to see volunteering experience on a student's record . Environmental volunteering is also becoming very popular . People organize " beach cleans " or " park cleans " where they gather together to pick up trash . Some volunteers plant trees or help protect local wildlife . These activities help keep our planet beautiful and healthy for everyone . It is also a wonderful way to get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air . Why do people volunteer if they don't get paid ? Most people say they do it because it makes them feel happy . Helping others gives people a sense of purpose and achievement . It is also a fantastic way to meet new people and make friends . When you volunteer for a project , you meet other people who care about the same things as you . This creates a strong feeling of community . Volunteering is also a great way to learn new skills . For example , if you volunteer at a charity shop , you can learn how to talk to customers and manage money . These skills can help you find a job in the future . Some people volunteer in different countries to learn a new language or see how other people live . This is often called " voluntourism , " and it can be a life - changing experience . You don't need a lot of time to be a volunteer . Some people only give one hour a week , while others might spend a whole weekend helping at a festival or an event . Every little bit of help is important . If everyone in a city volunteered for just one hour a month , think about how much better that city would be !
