Politeness is an important part of everyday communication in English - speaking countries . When you visit the United Kingdom , Canada , or the United States , you may notice people using specific words and phrases to show respect . These habits vary between countries , regions , and people , but polite language is useful in many situations . Being polite helps you make a good first impression and can make communication smoother . The most basic polite words are " please " and " thank you . " People use them all the time . For example , if you order a coffee , you say , " A latte , please . " When you receive it , you say , " Thank you . " This might seem simple , but in some languages , these words are not used as frequently as they are in English . Even if you are in a hurry , you should always include these words . " Sorry " is another word that people use very often . In the UK , people sometimes say " sorry " in small everyday situations even when no one is clearly at fault . If someone accidentally bumps into you on the street , both people may say " sorry . " It can be a friendly way to avoid conflict . If you need to interrupt someone , you should start with " Excuse me " instead of just starting to talk . When you want to ask for something , a question can sound more polite than a command . For instance , instead of saying " Open the window , " you can say " Could you open the window , please ? " You can also say , " Would you close the window , please ? " Both questions make the request sound softer and more respectful . This is especially important when talking to strangers or people at work . Saying " no " can also be tricky . In some situations , a flat " No " can sound abrupt . People often soften a refusal with " No , thank you " or " I am afraid I can't . " For example , if someone invites you to a party and you cannot go , you might say , " I would love to , but I am busy that night . " This shows that you appreciate the invitation . Small talk is another way people show politeness . When you meet a neighbor or a colleague , it is normal to ask " How are you ? " or talk about the weather . You do not need to give a long answer . A simple " Fine , thanks ! And you ? " is usually enough . It is a social ritual that shows you are friendly and open to conversation . Punctuality , or being on time , is often a sign of respect for another person's time . If you are meeting a friend for lunch , try to be there at the agreed time . If you are going to be late , even by a few minutes , it is polite to send a quick message to explain why . Queues are an important part of everyday life in the UK . A queue is a line of people waiting for a bus or in a store . Cutting in front of other people is usually seen as rude . Waiting your turn is part of social etiquette .
