The lights went out just after dinner . Maya had one page left , and the room was dark . Her father found a candle . The flame was small , and it moved when anyone walked past . Maya wanted the ceiling light back . A candle could save the page , but it was not the light she wanted . They sat at the table , and her father told her how that ceiling light had become possible . A long time ago , in Greece , a man named Thales rubbed a piece of amber with cloth . Amber is a hard yellow stone . After he rubbed it , the stone picked up tiny bits of dust . He had no lamp from that trick . He had a strange pull . Much later , the word electricity was taken from the Greek word for amber . In 1752 people began to tell a story about Benjamin Franklin , in America . He wanted to know if lightning was the same kind of thing as that small spark . The story says he flew a kite in a storm , with a metal key on the string , and the key gave off a spark . Lightning can kill . The story stayed famous because the question mattered . The flash in the sky and the dust on the amber are related . In 1800 Alessandro Volta , in Italy , built a pile of metal disks with wet card between them . The pile made a small flow of electricity , and it kept making it . His name is in the word volt . A person could have a steady flow without a storm and without rubbing a stone . Candles stayed in houses after that . In 1879 Thomas Edison , in America , showed a bulb that could stay bright for many hours . Other people had made bulbs too . His bulb was practical enough to use , and he also built a station that sent electricity along wires to nearby homes . A room could be bright without a flame . Nikola Tesla worked on sending that power a long way . He helped make alternating current practical , and that is the kind of electricity that still comes into many homes . George Westinghouse worked with him . At Niagara Falls , falling water was used to make electricity , with Tesla's ideas and Westinghouse's machines . The candle on Maya's table was the old tool . The wire in the wall was the later one . The ceiling light came back on . Maya blew the candle out . The page was easy to see , and she finished the last sentence . She had wanted the bulb . The bulb was there .
