The tourism industry faces unprecedented challenges from climate change, which threatens destinations, infrastructure, and the very viability of certain travel experiences. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise are reshaping the global tourism landscape. These environmental changes necessitate comprehensive adaptation strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism while protecting destinations and traveler experiences.

Coastal destinations are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Beach resorts, island nations, and coastal cities confront sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and increased storm intensity. Many popular tourist destinations face existential threats from rising waters that could submerge beaches, damage infrastructure, and displace communities. The Maldives, for instance, has implemented ambitious adaptation measures including artificial island construction, coral reef restoration, and building elevation. Other coastal destinations are investing in seawalls, beach nourishment projects, and mangrove restoration to protect against storm surges and erosion. These adaptation strategies require significant financial investment and long-term planning commitment from governments and tourism operators.

Winter tourism destinations confront the reality of diminishing snowfall and shorter winter seasons. Ski resorts in the European Alps, North American Rockies, and other mountain regions have observed declining snow reliability over recent decades. This trend forces adaptation through snow-making infrastructure expansion, diversification into year-round activities, and development of higher-altitude facilities. Some resorts have embraced summer tourism by developing hiking, mountain biking, and cultural attractions to compensate for reduced winter revenue. However, these adaptations come with environmental costs and may not be feasible for all locations, particularly smaller resorts with limited resources.

Extreme weather events including hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and heatwaves have become more frequent and severe, disrupting tourism operations and traveler safety. The Caribbean hurricane season has extended, affecting cruise itineraries and resort bookings. Wildfires in Mediterranean regions and western North America have forced evacuations and destroyed tourism infrastructure. Heatwaves have made some destinations uncomfortable or dangerous during peak summer months. Tourism operators must develop robust emergency response plans, invest in resilient infrastructure, and communicate risks effectively to potential visitors. Insurance costs have risen significantly in high-risk areas, creating financial pressure on tourism businesses.

Cultural heritage sites face unique climate change threats. Rising sea levels threaten archaeological sites along coastlines, while changing humidity and temperature patterns accelerate deterioration of ancient structures. Venice has invested in the MOSE flood barrier system to protect against acqua alta flooding. Other heritage sites implement monitoring systems, conservation treatments, and visitor management to reduce environmental stress. The loss of irreplaceable cultural heritage represents one of the most profound impacts of climate change on tourism, as these sites often serve as primary attractions for visitors.

The aviation industry, which enables global tourism, contributes to and is affected by climate change. Aircraft emissions represent approximately two to three percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, creating pressure for the industry to reduce its environmental footprint. Simultaneously, airlines face operational challenges from more frequent turbulence, altered flight paths due to extreme weather, and increased fuel costs from regulatory measures. Sustainable aviation fuels, electric
