Stars are giant balls of hot gas. They produce light and heat through nuclear reactions. The sun is the star closest to Earth. It provides the light and warmth that makes life possible on our planet. The sun is much larger than Earth, but it appears small because it is very far away.
Other stars are much farther away than the sun. The closest star to our sun is called Proxima Centauri. It is about 4 light years away. A light year is the distance light travels in one year. This means light from Proxima Centauri takes 4 years to reach us.
Stars come in different sizes and colors. Some stars are red, some are blue, and others are yellow or white. The color of a star tells us about its temperature. Blue stars are the hottest, while red stars are cooler. Our sun is a yellow star, which means it has a medium temperature.
We can see patterns of stars called constellations. Ancient people imagined shapes in the stars and gave them names. One famous constellation is the Big Dipper, which looks like a ladle. Another is Orion, which looks like a hunter with a belt. These patterns help us find our way in the night sky.
Some stars are brighter than others. The brightness of a star depends on its size and distance from Earth. Very bright stars are called first magnitude stars. Fainter stars have higher magnitude numbers. On a clear night away from city lights, we can see thousands of stars with our eyes.
