This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of five of the eighteen stories in Horacio Quiroga’s Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte (1917), retold in simple Spanish in 14 chapters: El almohadón de pluma, La gallina degollada, A la deriva, La insolación and La miel silvestre. A young bride falls ill in a cold white house, a couple turns against each other over their four sick sons, a man bitten by a snake drifts down the Paraná, five dogs sense death coming for their master in the Chaco, and a city accountant looks for adventure in the jungle of Misiones. Level A2 suits learners who know the past tenses: sentences of about 8 words, the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto, and plenty of dialogue. About 8,000 words.
