What you'll learn

Pretérito indefinido and imperfecto in narration, the pluscuamperfecto for earlier events (había vivido, había huido), the present tense in a retold vision, impersonal se and uno, a few subjunctives after como si, antes de que and pedir que, tú and usted between characters, vocabulary of war, the front, family and money

This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s 1916 novel of the First World War, retold in simple Spanish in 14 chapters that follow its three parts. Julio Desnoyers, grandson of the Argentine rancher Madariaga, lives an idle life in Paris until the war of 1914 divides his family: his father Marcelo stays at his château on the Marne as the Germans arrive, his cousins fight on the German side, and the Russian Tchernoff sees in the war the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Level A2 suits learners who know the past tenses: sentences of about 10 words, the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto, plenty of dialogue and a war vocabulary. About 9,900 words.
