Our teacher tells us to listen and write notes. Rosa welcomes us with a friendly voice. She works near big ovens and metal tables. She explains her job slowly so everyone understands. We sit on stools and watch her hands move fast but carefully.
Rosa shows a large pot on the stove. Brown soup moves inside it. She cuts carrots and potatoes on a wooden board. Onions make her eyes water, but she smiles anyway. She says salt helps flavor, and pepper helps too. She stirs slowly and checks the time.
One student asks about bread near the window. Rosa points to a tray with six round loaves. She says the bread is soft because she baked it early today. Another student asks why she chose cooking work. Rosa answers that she loved food as a child and learned recipes from her grandmother.
Rosa says she likes mornings best. She arrives before seven and checks food lists on paper. She talks with delivery drivers and stores boxes in cold rooms. Lunchtime is loud, but she knows many students by name. She remembers who plays football and who reads comics after lunch.
She remembers a week when the oven stopped working. Food came late, and teachers helped serve sandwiches instead. A repair worker fixed the machine on Tuesday. Rosa says problems happen, but teamwork helps. She still felt nervous that day because she cares about hungry kids.
A girl asks about dinners at home. Rosa cooks pasta for her family every Friday. Her husband sets plates, and her children pour water. They eat together and talk about school and work. Rosa says family meals make her calm after long days in kitchen noise.
Before we leave, Rosa gives us small cups of juice. She lets us taste cheese from a plate she made yesterday. Cheese feels smooth on the tongue. She saves the rest for teachers upstairs. We clap once, and Rosa bows like a performer, which makes us laugh.
We thank Rosa and walk back to our classroom quietly. Our teacher says we can write a short report from this visit. She wants three facts and one opinion from each student. I feel hungry and happy at the same time because soup smells still reach our hallway.
At recess my friend Marco says he wants to cook food like Rosa. I think work in kitchens looks interesting but tiring because cooks stand for many hours. Marco disagrees and says moving around is better than sitting all day. We both agree Rosa is kind and patient.
When lunch bell rings, soup is on the menu again. Soup tastes gentle and warm, like the room we visited in the morning. I sit with Marco and compare notes. He writes that Rosa is kind.
