You might come to meet dogs and cats looking for new homes. They wait in clean pens with soft blankets and fresh water. He is the organizer, Mr. Cole. He explains rules to every visitor at the door.
She works at the front desk. Her name is Tanya. She gives you a form to fill in before you walk through the hall. I stamp badges for new volunteers when they arrive at the side entrance.
We walk between the rows of pens and greet each animal by name. Rosa stops at a small brown dog near the window. She kneels and speaks in a gentle voice. It wags its tail when she says hello.
They are kittens in the corner room on the second floor. They play with a ball of yarn on the floor and chase each other. You watch them jump and tumble in the afternoon light. We laugh at their quick paws and bright eyes.
A family enters with two children after lunch. He asks about a cat for their apartment near the park. She reads the care sheet on the wall and nods slowly. They choose a gray cat and sign the papers at the desk.
I fill water bowls before the event ends at five o'clock. We tidy the hall when the last visitors leave through the main door. You leave with a smile if you find a new friend to take home. They thank us for the warm welcome and the clean pens.
Rosa and I ride the bus home together as the sun goes down. We talk about the pets that found homes today and the ones still waiting. It was a good day for our small volunteer team at the town hall.
