I am Jake. I am eight years old. I have a small gray cat at home. Her name is Luna. She likes warm places and quiet rooms. Today my mom and I go to the pet shop on Maple Street.

The shop is bright and clean. A woman at the door smiles at us. Her name tag says Anna. She works here every day and knows many animals. She walks with us to a shelf near the window. Her cat food boxes are on the top row.

We walk past a big cage with white rabbits. A boy near the cage points at one rabbit. He says his rabbit is soft and fast. His mom holds his hand and talks quietly. The rabbit moves its nose and eats a small green leaf.

Luna stays in my arms in her small carrier. The carrier has a blue handle that I like. My mom carries a wallet in her pocket. I hold a list of things we need for the week. Our list says food, a brush, and a toy.

Anna helps us find food for Luna. She opens a bag and shows us the picture on its label. The colors on the label are orange and white. My mom reads the price and nods. She puts the bag in our basket near the door.

I see a row of toys on a low table. A red ball sits next to a yellow mouse. I pick a soft toy for Luna because her old toy is torn. My choice is small and light. Luna will like it, I think.

Two girls stand by the fish tanks. They watch their goldfish swim in slow circles. A teacher waits outside at the bus stop sign. One girl says her fish likes the light in the tank. The other girl waves through the glass and laughs.

At the counter Anna scans our items. My mom pays with her card and thanks Anna. Anna puts our food and toy in a paper bag. She adds a free sticker for my notebook. Its picture shows a happy dog with a bone.

On the bus home Luna sleeps in her carrier on my lap. The ride is short and quiet. My mom reads a message from my dad at home. He says our dog waits by its bowl in the kitchen. I smile because both pets will be happy tonight.

At home I put the new toy on Luna's cushion. She touches it with her paw and jumps a little. My dad laughs and sits on the sofa. We all watch Luna play while the evening turns dark outside.

Gramática en contexto

Construcciones del texto para notar después de leer.

Her vs She: de quién es y quién hace la acción

Her name is Luna

Her name is Luna. She likes warm places.

Her = adjetivo posesivo, responde «de quién?»: Her name = el nombre que pertenece a alguien (Luna).\nShe = pronombre sujeto, responde «quién?»: She likes = ella es quien likes.

Her y she tienen roles diferentes: her muestra posesión, she muestra quién hace la acción.

Its vs It's: posesión vs contracción

The rabbit moves its nose

The rabbit moves its nose. It's a small nose.

Its (sin apóstrofo) = su (perteneciente a ello): its nose = la nariz perteneciente a él.\nit's (con apóstrofo) = it is o it has: It's cute = Es lindo.

Nunca confundas its e it's. El apóstrofo siempre significa contracción.

Their vs They're vs There

Their goldfish swim in slow circles

Their goldfish swim. They're at the shop. There is a fish.

Their (su de ellos) = posesivo: their goldfish = el pez dorado perteneciente a ellos.\nThey're = they are: They're happy = Ellos son felices.\nThere = allí: There is a fish = Hay un pez.

Their, They're y There suenan igual pero tienen significados completamente diferentes.
