On Saturday our team meets at the park gate at nine. My dad drives me in his car while my mom stays home. He drops me near the bench and wishes me luck. I join the other boys and girls on the grass. The air feels cool and fresh.
Mr Cole counts the players near the bench. His clipboard has our names in a list. He checks his watch and calls the group together. Our captain is Rosa. She wears a yellow armband and speaks in a calm voice. She tells us our places on the field before the match starts.
The other team wears red shirts. Their coach talks to the players by their goal. The keeper wears big gloves and stands tall. When our first shot flies toward the net, he jumps high and stops the ball. Fans in red shirts clap from seats on the hill.
Rosa passes the ball to me with her left foot. I run forward and look for Tom on the right side. My pass reaches him, but a defender runs fast too. Tom kicks hard and the keeper catches the ball again. We try once more after a throw from the side.
At half time Mr Cole gives us water from his cooler. His words are short and clear. He points at a weak spot near our left wing. Rosa nods and talks to the midfield group. My legs feel tired, but I want to play well in the second half.
In the second half Tom scores for our team with a header near the goal. The bench jumps and shouts with joy. The other coach still claps for the players because the match is not finished. The sun moves lower and the grass feels wet under our shoes.
Near the end a striker runs fast past our line. I tackle and stop the ball before it reaches their best shooter. Some fans sigh when our defender clears the ball to the keeper. She catches it and kicks to Rosa with a strong foot.
The final whistle comes from Mr Cole's mouth. Our score is two and their score is one. Parents clap from our side of the field. My dad hugs me and my mom takes a photo with her phone. I feel proud and happy on the walk to the car.
After the match our team shakes hands with the other team on the grass. Rosa thanks Mr Cole for his help this month. I put muddy shoes in my bag and drink water from a bottle. Our first win feels big in my chest all the way home.
