I joined a school exchange program at the start of the year. Our teacher organized it for the whole class. She gave every student a name and address from a school in another country. I felt excited when I opened my envelope.
Maya wrote her first letter in October. She introduced herself and told me her age and her hobbies. She said she liked drawing, swimming, and reading stories. I read her letter twice and showed it to my mother.
I wrote back quickly. I told Maya about my town and the small park near my house. I described the Saturday market and the river with ducks. She replied within two weeks with more news about her life.
He is Maya's older brother. His name is Jacob. He is fourteen years old. He loves music and plays the guitar in the evenings. He sometimes adds a small drawing to the bottom of Maya's letters.
They have a dog called Max. He is brown and full of energy. They walk him in the park near their apartment every Sunday morning. He chases leaves in autumn and runs in circles when he is happy.
We share many interests. We both enjoy reading before bed and watching cooking shows on television. She bakes cookies on Sunday afternoons. I help my mother make soup on cold winter evenings. We exchange recipes in our letters now.
She told me about cold winters in Toronto. She said the snow reaches her knees in January and the air is sharp and cold. They go sledding in the park with friends when school is closed. He says the river near their home freezes solid and people skate on it.
I told my grandmother about Maya. She smiled and said it was wonderful to have a friend so far away. My grandmother was very happy for me. She said good letters keep friendships strong across long distances.
You can find a pen pal too. You only need a pen, some paper, and a good story to share. I am glad I joined the program. She is one of my best friends now, and I have never even met her.
